Hazardous Wind Alerts

The Hurricane Network (THN) specializes in issuing hazardous wind alerts for non-tropical systems, including watches, warnings, and advisories, for coastal areas across the United States, this coverage also extends to Hawaii, Puerto Rico.

Criteria for Issuance

Hazardous Wind Warning

Sustained winds of hurricane-force (75 mph or greater) or wind gusts of 80+ mph are expected within 48 hours.

Hazardous Wind Watch

Sustained winds of hurricane-force (75 mph or greater) are possible, or wind gusts could exceed 80 mph. Usually a watch is issued within 72 hours of the onset of winds.

Hazardous Wind Advisory

Wind gusts could reach 75 mph within the next 72 hours.

Major Hurricane Wind Warning

Issued when sustained winds of 115+ mph are expected within 12 hours from a major hurricane.
